Ji Xiang Drum—an Inheritance of Chinese Folk Culture

Ji Xiang drum, also known as Zhuan Zhuan Xiang, began to be made in a village east of Anyang County in Anyang City, dating back to a period of Late Ming and Early Qing. It was elaborately designed with nice look. It could make sound like the crying of cicada or grasshopper by shaking and spinning it around in the air, arousing fascination and imaginary thinking of people.

The drum is small but exquisite. Its main body is made from clay of Huan River and then burned into the shape of hollowed column with no top and bottom. After that, the body part is wrapped and decorated with bright colored paper and the top is covered and pasted with Mo (a thin paper material of bamboo fiber), through the centre of which is a cotton thread with one end tied to Mo and one end knotted with a string of horsetail (about 15 cm long), the other end of which is connected and twined onto the apical portion of a bamboo stick. It is about 10 cm long, so that one could hold it in hand. At last, rosin is put on to connective point of the horsetail and bamboo stick. When people spin it around, the drum could make the sound that becomes clearer and more pleasant as it is continuingly moving around in the air. That is so amazing that one may ask himself:” How could it be made by our ancestors far away from now?”
